Samsung 226BW Widescreen TFT Monitor Review

Samsung 226BW TFT MonitorWidescreen TFT Monitors from Samsung have recently become synonymous with an above average product at reasonable prices and their new 226BW is no exception.

As would be expected, the unit sports both Analogue and DVI interfaces - the DVI input also supporting HDCP for future compatibility with protected HD video sources.

The resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels provides for a dot pitch of 0.282mm, which for comparison is slightly larger than a standard 17" screen (0.26mm)  but not quite the 0.292mm of a standard 15" or 19" monitor.  If you prefer a larger text size than a 17" monitor provides then this monitor will provide just that.

Externally, the monitor has a very glossy black finish and a narrow bezal  with some silver trim which looks very professional and compliments the display performance well.

The stand is a little of a disappointment, however - providing basic tilt and swivel adjustment - but no height adjustment.  This is the only significant omission we were aware of - and as the unit does have a standard VESA wall mount (100mm) - it could be adjusted with the additional or an adjustable monitor support arm at a later date, although this will of course add to the cost.

The specified 3000:1 contrast ratio is high by comparison to most LCD displays and results in bright and vibrant pictures and video.  The colour balance is very good - we would rate at least 9 - 9.5 out of 10, which while not perfect is certainly better than almost any other Widescreen TFT monitor in this price range.

Overall
The Samsung SM226BW is an excellent screen for those needing the additional desktop area of a 22" monitor.  It offers significantly better text size than both 17" 1280x1024 and 20" 1680x1050 screens and is far better suited to long periods of use than 17" and 20" offerings. The 2mS response time and 1000:1 contrast is ideally suited to gaming applications, CAD and program development alike as well as high-end digital photo editing.  'Power' users of office applications and especially spreadsheet users will be very pleased with the high resolution display, coupled with the best pixel/text size in its class.
